Summer is on its way and this year is on the books to be the hottest summer in years. What does that mean for you? It means you need to be prepared in the event you need an HVAC contractor! A lack of understanding in the HVAC field could mean you are going to overpay for services or get below average results.
The Georgia heat is nothing to take lightly so we have put together a list of questions to ask your HVAC contractor before the job gets started.
Let’s take a look!
1. Are You Insured and Licensed?
This should be your first question when hiring an HVAC contractor. A licensed contractor will have met the requirements needed to complete the work successfully. In most cases, they will have taken an exam or test to become licensed.
Furthermore, having insurance is a must when hiring a contractor. If your contractor is uninsured it could mean that you would be paying out of pocket if they or one of their workers was injured on the job. No insurance equals no hire!
2. Do You Have Any References?
A reputable contractor should gladly furnish references. You want to get a feel for who they are and their business standards. Ask for the names of customers or companies that the HVAC contractor has done business with in the past.
When you call to verify the references ask questions like the following:
- Was the job done on time?
- Were there any issues with billing?
- Was the job performed correctly?
- Were the workers professional?
If your contractor is reluctant to give references or simply does not have any, it might be a good option to look elsewhere.
3. Do You Offer Financing?
Depending on the type of work you need to be done the job could become costly. Getting details about billing out of the way ahead of time will save you the headache of a surprise bill.
Ask for an estimate upfront to get an idea of what you will be spending.
Many contractors will require payment all at once before the job starts but others may offer financing options to help spread out the payments.
4. What Brands Do You Carry?
You should do your own research on which brands are best for your needs. Take into consideration your finances and lifestyle when you are choosing a brand.
For example, if energy efficiency or clean energy is important to you it is a good idea to ask if the contractor uses brands that are affiliated with the Federal Energy Star Program. These programs oftentimes also offer rebates when their products are used.
5. Who Will Be Performing the Work?
In most cases, the person that you set up the initial consultation with is not the same person that will be performing the job.
Be sure to get details of who will be working and how long the job is expected to take in writing. Ask if the workers, like the contractor, are also certified and insured.
