Why You Need An HVAC Preventative Maintenance Checklist

HVAC system repair can be incredibly costly. Most of us can’t afford to be continually paying someone to come in and fix our broken system. So how can we save our systems from breaking and our wallets from emptying?

If you get ahead of problems and do routine maintenance, you will see breakdowns far less often. You have to ditch the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. You need to get into a routine of preventative maintenance.

According to Grainger:

“A preventive maintenance program should be well defined, periodically reviewed and adjusted as necessary. To help ensure proper implementation, procedures should be written in sufficient detail for each piece of equipment in the program.”

Here are the steps you should definitely include in your preventative maintenance program:

1. Check the Settings on Your Thermostat

You want to ensure that your settings are not only comfortable for you and your family, but also as energy-efficient as possible.

2. Check Your Electrical Connections

Anything that your HVAC system is connected to should also receive routine checks and maintenance.

3. Lubrication

Keeping all moving parts in your system properly lubricated is essential to good preventative maintenance.

4. Inspect/Clean the Condensate Drain

If your drain is clogged, there is an increased risk water damage in your home and there could be effects on the indoor humidity.

5. Check Controls

Routinely check the controls of your system to make sure that everything is connected and works properly. You don’t want something as simple as a bad connection to a button to be the reason your system breaks down.

6. Replace Filters on Time

Set a schedule to replace your air filters. This is one of the most important steps on this list.

7. Inspect Moving Parts, Such as the Fan

This goes along with lubrication. You want to ensure that every part moves smoothly and correctly. Especially the fan.

8. Check the Ignition on Your Heater

Make sure everything in the ignition assembly is put together properly and functions correctly. This is another crucial step as a mistake could cause your system to either not work or catch fire.
