While the snow might not be flying in Georgia anytime soon, the coming months will bring some chilly temperatures that will have you reaching for your thermostat. With an average January low temperature in the 30s in Woodstock, don’t get caught in the cold with a broken heater.
To make sure you and your family stay warm this winter, you’ll want to make sure you perform some routine maintenance (or call the pros to do it for you) on your centralized heating system.
Here are 5 things you should be doing to make sure your system is running efficiently and effectively.
1. Test Your Thermostat
To make sure your thermostat is working properly, turn it on to heat and turn up the temperature and make sure you hear the heat kick on. If not, there may be an issue that needs to be addressed, or the thermostat needs to be replaced. If it runs but turns off quickly, that is a problem as well.
2. Replace Your Filters
Dirty filters mean that your system doesn’t run efficiently, as it has to work harder for the air to get through. It also allows dust and allergens to enter your home. Filters should be replaced every 30 days or so, depending on how much you use your system.
3. Clean the Ducts
The ducts carry air throughout your home to heat or cool it. Clean ducts, like clean filters, allow your system to work more efficiently and keep dust and allergens out of your home.
If you have pets, asthma or allergies, suspect critters are in your ducts, or have recently done work on your home, it’s especially important to have your ducts cleaned. When you call a pro, ask them to show you any mold, debris, or other issues with your ducts.
4. Check the Ducts
Not only should you make sure the ducts are clean, but you’ll also want to make sure they were installed properly and that the joints do not leak. If they aren’t installed properly, your warm air could be leaking out of the ducts.
If your ducts are not properly insulated, or if the insulation has deteriorated, the air can cool as it is flowing through them, diminishing the heat that you’re getting throughout your house.
5. Call a Professional for Service
